I recently found a recipe to make us a BLT…with tempeh…so is that an TLT? Or a FLT (facon, lettuce, and tomato)?
I don’t see anything wrong with the real stuff (thanks John and Debbie for sending us a box), but in a usually pork free land we’ve gotta be creative. Not to mention that tempeh is cheap and plentiful and healthful. Oh and it turned out AWESOME!
(makes a heaping plateful, more than enough for 8 full sandwiches)
3 packs of tempeh (I’d say about 20 oz)
3-4 Tbsp sweet soy sauce (original recipe calls for maple syrup, or palm sugar syrup would work)
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp cumin
a pinch of cayenne
1 tsp liquid smoke (I didn’t have it so I used extra pepper and some paprika)
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp black pepper
*to tell the truth I just dumped until it smelled good
1. Slice the tempeh very thin, think bacon thinness while you are slicing.
2. Combine all of the ingredients, and soak the tempeh while heating the pan (1-2 minutes).
3. Add 1-2 tsp olive oil, and lay each piece of tempeh flat on the pan.
4. Cook for about a minute and then flip. Cook until both sides are crisp and browned.
